Nonlinear Physics: Complex or just Complicated?
The world around us is full of intricate processes and structures. Modern Physics has attempted in the last four decades to penetrate these seemingly unexplainable phenomena, to provide characterization, understanding and predictions. The tools involved are mathematical in nature, and in this talk I will provide a general audience review to these methods and novel ways of thinking. Central to my talk will be the distinction between "complex" and "complicated" where the first term refers to phenomena that have an underlying, (sometimes hidden), simple mathematical structure, and the second is in principle impossible to penetrate with simple tools.

Why Are There Six Degrees of Separation in a Social Network?
Stefano Boccaletti
The concept of "small world" networks reflects that the maximal social distance scales logarithmically, rather than linearly, with population size. Furthermore, many experiments conducted on social networks confirmed the existence of the six degrees of separation. However, a clear explanation of the mechanisms through which social networks organize into ultra-small world states is still missing. We will show that the mechanism behind such observed regularity can be found in a dynamic evolution of the network. Our study points out that evolutionary rules of the kind traditionally associated with human cooperation and altruism can account for the emergence of this social network attribute.
