Rodney S. Ruoff , UNIST Distinguished Professor (The Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science, and The School of Energy Science and Chemical Engineering), directs the Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (an Institute for Basic Science Center). Prior to joining UNIST in 2014, he was the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Austin from September, 2007. He has co-authored about 500 peer-reviewed publications (H index=177, citations>260000, a total of 5 papers cited over 10000 times) related to chemistry, physics, materials science, mechanics, and biomedical science, and is a Fellow of MRS, APS, AAAS and RSC. He is the recipient of the 2014 Turnbull Prize from the MRS, the SGL Skakel Award from American Carbon Society in 2016, the James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials from APS in 2018, the Clarivate Citation Laureate in 2018 and the Hall of Citation Laureates 2021.
七、讲座内容简介
I have invented several new approaches to introduce carbon atoms into either single element liquid metals or liquid metal alloys, offering possible new directions for synthesizing new carbon allotropes or new methods for making known carbon materials such as diamond, graphite, others. First, I describe some of our research related to diamond: (i) Kinetics of dissolving single crystal diamond at the interface with metal films, specifically nickel and cobalt films[1]; (ii) Growth of diamond in liquid metal on (a) single crystal diamond (seeded growth)[2], and (b) homogeneous nucleation and growth of diamond (seedless growth)[3]. Next, I describe my two new ways to introduce C atoms into liquid metals[4]. We will then have a 5-minute “pause” so that you may think deeply and talk with each other about the implications of what I have described. Then, I will offer my thoughts about some possibly interesting new research paths. This is basic science at this early stage and the ideas are new.
